Honoring
Sgt. Maj. Joe Houle, USMC (Ret.)

Born and raised in Dolgeville, New York, Houle was inspired by his family's military heritage and the Veterans Day parades in his hometown. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on March 27, 1964, and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune. In 1966, he deployed to Vietnam with Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. During his tour, Houle sustained multiple injuries—shrapnel wounds to his shoulder and legs—but continued to serve with resilience and dedication. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries and was honorably discharged in 1970.

In 1974, Houle re-enlisted as a Private First Class and quickly ascended through the ranks. He served as a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in 1977 and was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in 1980. His leadership extended internationally when he trained British Royal Marines in 1982. In 1989, Houle was appointed Sergeant Major of 2nd Maintenance Battalion and led the unit during Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait. He retired in November 2000 after 32 years of service.
Following his retirement, Houle continued to serve his community and fellow veterans. He co-founded the Carolina Museum of the Marine, dedicated to honoring the legacy of Marines and Sailors from the Carolinas. Houle served as the Director of Operations and Artifacts, overseeing the museum's development and artifact collection. He remained actively involved with the museum until his retirement in November 2023, after 24 years of service. Despite stepping down from his official role, Houle continues to support the museum's mission and the veteran community.
Joe's leadership & dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the Purple Heart, and the respect and admiration of his peers and subordinates. His story is a testament to the values of honor, courage, and commitment that define the Marine Corps. Even after his retirement, Houle remains a steadfast advocate for veterans and continues to inspire future generations with his service and dedication.
